In celebration of That Awful Dog

File Under: Nubbin

This week marks Coco's first birthday, and to celebrate I've gathered most of the Daily Chuck photos that feature her and set them to music. Consequently, this video also turned out to be a celebration of Chuck's enduring patience. I know, I know, we've never done this for Chuck, but I intend to put one together next March to celebrate his seventh birthday. But don't worry about Chuck, right now he's lying on the couch eating a bologna sandwich.

Many thanks to Maker's Mark bourbon for helping us survive a year of living with Satan:

So cute. I'd get a dog if I could guarantee that kind of cuteness.

    Beyond awesome.

  • 3. Kate said:

She may very well be Satan, but damn is she cute!

  • 4. laurie said:

    woof.

As long as Chuck has the bologna sandwich, all is at peace in your household.

Also, I just realized that I don't know how to spell bologna.

Coco is beautiful, happy birthday to her :)

so sweet. you are a great dog AND human mama.

  • 7. Catootes said:

A wonderful Coco montage! Are you certain Highway to Hell wouldn't have been appropriate?

    Thanks for the viewing.

  • 8. Lauren said:

LOL ALSO! I love how she looks all angelic in most of these, but we all know better.

    AND WET PUPPY!!!

  • 9. Gregarious Kat said:

Didn't Chuck turn seven years old this year? I just remember the "memorial page" and everyone thought he had died. But, I was just saying...if he's eight, he gets more goodies. And if you're like me, you keep track of more important things based on how old your pet is. Like did I graduate college in 01 or 00. Hmmmm we got the cat in 01, so that was my graduation present. Oh, and something else happened that year, oh yeah, we got married. Love you Dooce and your political talk too. I am totally hooked on Uppercase Woman that one of your commenters recommended. Have a great week.

  • 10. Charlie Hills said:

I really wish I could have come up with two dog names as awesome as that.

And Lauren, you can't spell bologna? Just remember the song. "Cuz Oscar Mayer has a way with B O L O G N A!"

    :)

  • 11. Lauren said:

Haha, thank you, Charlie for the reminder! I just kept typing balogna and kept thinking, "No that's not right! Maybe if I re-type it in the exact same way, it'll look correct."

  • 12. Rachel said:

Are you sure it's Coco's birthday? Because a doggie photo montage sounds like a birthday gift to ME.

  • 13. Thinky said:

    Happy birthday, Coco!

  • 14. Adiel said:

I can always see why people buy dogs. It's cos they're really cute with they're puppies. Then they grow up.

  • 15. Alana in Vancouver said:

Wow, she grew up SO fast!!! :)

  • 16. Anonymous said:

Every time I see a picture of Chuck, all I can think is "He's just perfect." And all that comes to mind when I see Coco (other than she's absolutely gorgeous) is "Oh my God, what a little shit."

  • 17. Cee said:

I'm sure you've heard this before - but she's a working breed. She needs to DO stuff. If you provided her with a job, she wouldn't be such a "bad" dog.

  • 18. Maria from NJ said:

She is one beautiful gal. Happy Birthday COCO!

  • 19. kerry said:

That face is TOO CUTE! The cute ones are always trouble. I also had an adorable yet often-satanic dog.

  • 21. Vanessa said:

You mean Chuck has been a puppy too? Can't wait for those pictures! :)

  • 22. Carly said:

How many of those pictures were of Coco pulling on Chuck's collar?

  • 23. Dogmom said:

Heather and Jon, you are going to love forever that you have that video -- of both of them. I just love your creativity. You must spend all of your time with a camera in your hand. I would love it if I had done that with Belle all her life. She's 11 now and I'm feeling her time getting shorter with me, and I so wish I had as many wonderful photos of my little McNab -- a true Satan in her own right also -- as you do with yours. I better get started with the time we have left! Thanks for the wonderful tribute.

  • 24. Haley said:

Talk about a wolf in sheep clothing.

I didn't become aware of your awesomeness (website) until after Coco was already part of the family so I have never seen all of those sweet, sweet little puppy dog pics, with all that cuteness how were you know Satan was in there? I'm thinking you were deceived.

Funny about comment No. 9 (which reminds me that is when I started reading this site the month of the aged 7 years masthead)I too was thinking 7 this year hmmmmmmmm, but since the arrival of Coco none of that probably matters because he may feel more like 77 at this point.

Happy Birthday Coco!! How about a poop cake? ha ha

  • 25. Jennifer said:

As I was watching this video my daughter came up and asked what it was. I said "It's a video celebrating Coco's 1st birthday." So she says "Wow...a year already? How old is Chuck?" and I said "He'll be 7 in March."

I love that I know this much about your pets.

  • 26. kpapa said:

Maybe, just maybe, waaaaaaaaay deep down in the depths of his doggie soul, Chuck kind of doesn't mind Coco being around. Maybe. There is a glimmer of love (masked in annoyance and pissed-off-ness) in those images.

  • 27. Lucy in Portland, OR said:

Thanks for the retrospective on Coco. I was turned on to your blog by a friend a few months ago, and I particularly enjoy the Chuck and Coco "chronicles." I have friends with sheepdogs, and I know how crazy they are to live with so I commend you! I hadn't seen the puppy pics... OMG, the cuteness is debilitating. She looks like a muppet.

  • 28. Suzanne said:

    As always, love you guys.

Coco is the cutest, next to Chuck and... my dogs =)

  • 32. Altissima said:

@Gregarious Kat - As far as I remember, that banner with picture of Chuck was celebrating the 7th b/day of the dooce blog, not Chuck's b/day.

  • 33. Niki said:

From your posts, I know that Cocoa can be a real shit. But I must admit, she has a very fetching face. Happy Birthday to her, and good luck to the rest of you.

  • 34. Amy said:

OMG They're both so cute! I love Coco's signature head tilt. Happy Birthday Coco.
Haha that photo of the two of them with Leta's socks cracked me up. Thanks Heather!

It must be something about Halloween-ish dog births. My last truly satanic pup was a Halloween puppy. Thankfully once he became an eighty-pound terror, I "lost" him in a break-up. Gee, was I depressed.... um, not.

  • 36. Mandy said:

I am the absolute opposite to you in that I never take photos (due to sheer laziness). After watching that I want to go out, get a really good camera and start documenting my life. That was just fantastic, it actually brought tears to my eyes - which turned to laughter tears when I read the last line.

From one Aussie to another, happy birthday Coco, you little shit.

Thanks so much for the inspiration xx

I too just joined the site (thank god, because a day without dooce, makes my screws loose!)and would love to see how it all came to turn.
    Thanks!!

  • 39. Katie said:

How can she be so cute and yet be so evil? It's always the cute ones... good thing you guys trained Chuck to put up with loads of crap early in life! Patience is a virtue! And so is balancing a stapler on your head.

    Happy B-day Coco!

  • 40. norm said:

    Beautiful.

Coco is a dead ringer for our dog (but for the tail, ours is a border collie). She was just as chewy and hectic and loud and shit-eaty as Coco is now, until one day she just up and said, nope, I'm all grown up now, and became sedate and affectionate and old and slow and wise. She's 13 now, stone deaf, and getting over some kind of neurological thing that made her stagger. And she's happy. Seeing Coco just brings everything back, mostly good memories (ha!).

  • 41. MichelleB said:

Happy Birthday Coco! For our 20th anniversary, I adopted a maltese named Lucky for my hubby and my he bought me a gorgeous diamond necklace from www.idonowidont.com so it was a really special day for all of us. I was busy admiring my new necklace and He got to play with Lucky all day, she still needs training but is adorable!

You guys are such awesome doggie parents. I know it hasn't been easy with Coco in the house, yet you still love the little shit. In my house, we have our own "little shit" except we call her a "little bitch".

There must be something about this dog!! When I started to play the video my puppies starting barking like crazy. They must have sensed her potential for mischief via some weird dog wavelength...

  • 47. Wendy Darling said:

ok... that was real cute and all, but I have to say I really miss seeing the pictures of Chuck (and ONLY Chuck) every stinkin' day. Wouldn't it be so nice for coco to have her own "pic of the day" so all of us Chuck-only people could choose to not click it. =) I'm only half kidding. A poop cake will do just fine!

  • 48. IrishGumbo said:

Awww, mannn! I had a really crappy week, and was all set to wallow in a world class bitch-fest, and then I see them (sniff, sniff). Now I feel all squishy (in a good way).

Time for me to hit the couch with MY glass of scotch, er, bologna sandwich.

    Neat video!

  • 49. Lea said:

  • 50. Ann L said:

She looks so regal in that pose on the stairs, taken from slightly below her. Like, OK, minor human, you may worship my wonderfulness.

  • 51. Tanya said:

Her little puppy fangs were so ridiculous. She's very naughty, but very, very cute.

Coco is too cute, even if she eats poop.

  • 53. nikki said:

Sure, sure. We all think it's a cute video. But what does LETA think of it??? :)

  • 54. Don said:

I didn't realize Coco was so young. Normally I would reassure you that after the second birthday the dog will calm down. Sorry. This breed keeps bouncing off the wall.

Remember, what doesn't kill you..., no, let's not go there.

Maybe you should be grateful for all the material Coco is giving you for your blog. That's it. Focus on the interesting material the rest of us can laugh at.

  • 55. Elizabeth said:

That's a great montage! My favorite is the photo of Chuck and Coco at the beach, with Coco coming towards the camera with her tongue out- such a cutie. Hard to believe there's evil in such a cute face!

  • 56. No Dramas said:

The way you talk of Coco reminds me so much of my husband, all "little shit" stuff but everyone knows deep down how much love you have for both dogs.
I am always amazed at how quickly puppies grow. I can see a lot of my blue heeler (another aussie dog) in some of the ways Coco stands and in her eyes.

Happy Birthday Coco and Here is to another year to the Dooce's!

  • 57. mamalea said:

Coco is a beautiful little shit. So beautiful that I just burned my cookies while watching the video.

  • 58. Jen said:

Almost makes me want to get a second dog...but then I think about the stories of poop being tracked through the house and, well, that right there stops the desire pretty quickly.

  • 59. ElementaryDear said:

My favorite part is the fade out into "you little shit". HAR. And now I am trying to talk my husband into getting me a dog just like her, despite all the puking and shitting. Happy Birthday, Coco.

Hello, my name is Samantha and I'm a Dooce-aholic. Loved this video! Love to read about your adventures. Thanks for giving me much needed giggles at work!

  • 61. KAS said:

The whole time the video was running, my son (who is 1 1/2) insisted on sitting on my lap, saying "good girl" since every creature on four legs is a "good girl" and not a dog, cat, etc. Blame it on my mother. There are two dogs at her house, both female, and they are always "good girls".

Happy birthday Coco, and thank you again Heather for being the amazing woman that you are.

I could blah blah blah all day about how much I love reading your blog but haven't commented before now (the comments are usually at about a gazillion and I tend to think that someone has probably already made my point about 100 comments previously and far more eloquently). But I got my second dog at the same time as you got Coco and a friend recommended I get to reading Dooce, so I did. And it's wonderful to see that you have the same overwhelimingly heartfelt love for a troublesome, frustrating little twit that I have for my pooch(es). This post is the best thing I've seen on the internet since a chimpanzee hugging a baby tiger.

    Love the photos!

My just shy of 17 year old dog is on the cusp of leaving us. I'm hoping that he'll go peacefully in his sleep before the situation forces our hand. He's been such a sweet and loyal companion - okay yes, he's sweet and loyal and at that same time he's never met a carpet or floor that he couldn't destroy!

Doesn't really matter though. In the cost benefit analysis he's given so much more than he's gotten. I hate that he's now deaf and mostly blind. At the same time, he manages. Not at his puppy best in any way, shape or form but still he's not indicating that he's a wreck either.

Thanks for your blog - usually funny, often provocative, and almost aways dead on. Definately more than worth the read!

Oh my gosh. I totally almost cried watching that! Then I got to "you little shit." Hee hee... Great video! Have loved watching Coco grow.

okay, I still don't understand why she would pee on your pillow...and all the mess...and the poo eating and the incessant curiousness (exhibited in many of the photos) all of this stuck out in my mind because I have a dog and I was like, shoot...I am so lucky! AND after all that you ran after sheep for her...why? I am guessing it is because she is so friggin cute and looks sooo sweet. That look she is giving you in that photo of you two...that is just pure love and devotion and it is awesome. Now that I think about it, however, my dog and I have a similar relationship...she has definitely been a shit, but her sweetness and love make up for it.

You should be ashamed of yourself. How dare you say such horrible things about this beautiful creature. She's only a year old now--what is she going to think when she's old enough to read these entries??

Anywho, I just added your blog to my blog roll. Keep up the great ink work!

The video was cute, but I couldn't watch the whole thing, since the constant zooming in and out, while mild and tastefully done, made me dizzy.

(Then again, I might try again when I'm not slightly hungover.)

I just knew there would be a funny comment at the end of the video...LOL!! Too funny. Nice video, and as always, beautiful photos of your gorgeous Coco

Those are two damn good-looking dogs. And what else do you really want from a dog besides attractiveness? Oh, yeah, perhaps a disclination for consuming their own feces?

Thanks for making me burst into happy tears. Our dog is in his final days but has been for months, so everything dog-related makes me completely emotional. One day you think it may be his last and the next day he's romping around like a puppy. It's just so hard to know when the time is right...
    Coco is gorgeous. Thanks.

Dear Heather, (okay, since MY name is Heather, but I go by Talon it still feels weird to type Heather to you...)

Over the years I've read your blog I've sent you a few emails, some about your fish, some thanking you, some just to say hi, and commented on your posts...and may I just apologize for my overzealous manner of posting in the last open post you had? Thanks.

Anyway,I believe you when you say that you read every comment, ever email that you get. And that always makes me feel good.

This is a very long winded way of wanting to thank you for sharing your little shit, and your cat-deer with us, as well as your family.

Two years ago, I had to make the horrible decision to let my Raven go. He was ten and a half (and bordered on being a giant breed, so...really he was an old man) and went into chronic kidney failure. This dog was my LIFE after my son died in 1997. And my daughter grew up with Raven as her "big brother" and never knew they weren't blood related.

I miss having a dog, but I'm too sick with my stupid disease, and too poor with my husband's unemployment to commit to one, no matter how much I ache to have a dog back in my life. And...I still want Raven. My goo-goo puppy.

Even today I miss him so much I could cry...but your pictures and posts about your dogs brings me alot of joy. So thank you. Thank you for having dogs and for loving them, and most of all for sharing them with the rest of your blog reading world.

It means really alot to some of us.

I am so sorry- while I know this was about Coco all i kept looking at was Chuck. I have said before (and will now repeat) i wish Chuck could morph into a human male.
He is patient, kind, sexy, great looking, obedient!!,good temperment has great focus on the immediate task and can tolerate heckling.
plus I see potential for a good/steady income.
    (?-chimney inspector?!)(clothing model)
Cocoa wouldn't be (starting) to turn into such a sweetie if it wasn't for Chuck's mentoring.(OK ya'all get some human credit)
Time to write a "Chuck's Book on Life"
    .........ohmygoodness Heatheranotherbook!

I am waiting to see if yours will come to the Toronto Public Library

The start of each day for me includes Chuck and girl.

We are Fostering our 2nd dog (black Lab) for Dog Guides -hopefully to become a seeing eye dog-we might have him another 2-3 months.
My life from now on will never ever be without a dog -silly isn't it that a pup can make-my-life-complete? (even when there are really really bad days-it's OK)

Happy Belated to Cocoa...hugs to Chuck

  • 169. Lisa said:

Happy birthday, Satan. Many thanks for all the great material you provide on a weekly basis to lighten my days ; ) You are the proverbial brat that has to stake their claim because the older sibling (Chuck) is so great. Still think eating your own shit is taking it too far but guess there are no hard rules there.....

When evil is SO cute (and furry), who can fight it? Heather, that photo of Ms. Satan after her bath (where you see the true evil/cuteness in her eyes) needs to be made into t-shirts.

i too love makers mark--probably a product of our growing up in tennessee.

Thank you for proving that someone takes more pictures of their dogs than I do! Now I feel that a montage, set to music, is in order for my dog...though it would never turn out to be half as magical as yours. Thanks for a great end to a crappy week (on my side)...even if Coco is a little shit she is adorable, which honestly counts for quite a bit =) Happy Birthday Coco! Can't wait for Chuck's birthday...the bologna sandwich may keep him quiet for now but he knows that you owe him one!

  • 177. amyz5 said:

loved this. i have seen it done for kids (we jews love to do this for bar mitzvah, are you sure your dogs are not jewish) but never for pets.
