Not yet on a first name basis
When we went in for an ultrasound a little over three weeks ago the doctor determined that I had a low-lying placenta, meaning it had formed at the lower half of the uterus. Excuse me while I slip into technical pregnancy talk for a moment: this can potentially be a problem if it doesn't eventually move upward during the pregnancy because it can cover all or part of the cervix, a condition known as placenta previa that can cause bleeding or symptoms of early labor. She also couldn't get the baby into a position that made it possible to inspect the end of her spine, so we scheduled another ultrasound to take a look at these concerns. That appointment was last Friday, and during that exam we got to meet the baby's feet:
She yawned four times while we were watching, a gesture that silenced both me and Jon. I've only recently been able to feel her kicking around in the womb, so in many ways the only physical manifestation of the pregnancy so far has been my increasingly immobile body. This baby moves much differently than Leta did, and where Leta's movements within felt like she was knocking down walls, this baby feels much more like she's tiptoeing through the room. Watching her stretch her mouth wide open crystallized the reality of all these symptoms— the swollen fingers and toes, the flesh-eating acne, the embarrassing, uncontrollable flatulence that I often try to pass off as a creaky wooden floorboard. There is a certain look I have perfected when out in public, and when Jon turns around suddenly because he cannot believe that my dignity would allow such a sound to happen, all I have to do is raise my right eyebrow. This is code for YOU DID NOT HEAR ANYTHING.
Friday it sort of hit us squarely in the face: holy shit, there's a human in there.
The placenta had moved upward significantly, and all the baby's parts looked well-formed and jutted into and out of all the right places. The doctor asked us if we had chosen a name yet, and my answer was probably a lot more detailed than she had planned for. Thing is, we had a name picked out for a boy. In fact, we've had a name picked out for a boy since the beginning of our relationship. A boy was always going to be named after Jon's grandfather, Truman, and then we'd only have to negotiate the middle name. Something short, precise, something I could yell easily and derisively when I discovered he had peed on the toilet seat.
But we cannot agree on a girl's name. And every time I suggest something lovely or something sweet he says, no way, absolutely not, he knew a girl in grade school with that name, and she used to eat her boogers.
Then how about this name? No, he once dated a this name, and not only was she a bad kisser, but she eventually became a polygamist.
What about this one? Hell no, he once worked with a this one, and her hair smelled like cat food.
This? Reminds him of moldy cheese.
That? Makes him want to shoot squirrels.
So no, doctor. We haven't yet chosen a name.

I'm due 6 weeks before you and am also having a little girl. Just had a follow-up ultrasound last week and saw her opening and closing her mouth, putting her thumb in and out of it, and she was actually blinking at us - it was so amazing!
We are naming our baby Rael (pronounced "rye-l" if that makes sense, it means Rachel in Estonian which is my background). My second choice is Isla....I think Isla sounds really nice with your last name.
Anyhow, had to give you my suggestion!

Yeah, why not Truly. That's a great beautiful name, and goes well with Leta.
BTW, am devouring It Sucked and then I Cried.
Determined at page 10 that it is definitely the greatest pregnancy book I have ever read, and I have not been one of your blog followers forever.
Also, now, whenever I pee, I am thinking of, or doing the Ten and Two! And I'm not pregnant, so that is a scary thing! Loving the book! Can't wait to review it, and also meet you in Oak Brook!

I wasn't going to comment, just read. Then I came across the suggestion of Fay. I have completely fallen in love with that name. How beautiful would Faye (I like it better with an e) and Leta sound together? And it sounds so beautiful, and gentle and lovely and that's what I picture your little yawner being like.
I am so happy for you and your family, Heather. I'm sending you good thoughts everyday.

I love Truman for a girl or boy. But Truman Capote is one of my favorite authors, especially for "A Christmas Memory," and I would slap the name Truman onto anything worth naming if I were allowed. I ended up with Juliet for my daughter--one of the few my husband and I agreed on.
But I will offer up some others of my favorites in case Truman for girl isn't your thing. Heavy on the literary references:
Harper (Can't love Truman Capote without loving Harper Lee)
Georgina
Clementine
Babette
Eloise
Penelope
Glad to see all is well in utero.

Heather,
You come from a family of people with interesting names (September, Ranger, Coco come to mind) why not name the child Truman? Add a frilly middle name and you are golden. Kids always hate their names anyway - at least pick something that when shouted in a mall causes a kid to flinch on the spot.
Good luck!

Dear God! Not the “that name reminds of X in elementary/middle/high school as s/he did X/Y/Z.” I hated that debate when we were doing the name game during my pregnancy. My fiancé did it all the time! I liked the name Caitlyn he didn't as any Katie's he knew were dumb, a bitch or something or another. He hated the name Jacob as cob reminded him of corn on the cob and he hated the name Jake as it reminded him of someone he hated. WTF? We ended up with HIS middle name as our son’s name, how original? Then again, I drove him nuts when I vetoed his boy name suggestions as the former whore in me slept or fooled around with some guy(s) name X/Y/Z. Yes Aaron your mother was whore. That's why you’re not named Mike.

We worked it this way...for girls, I get to pick the first name and he gets to pick the middle name, and vice versa for boys. We agreed to only discuss names once a week. We each got 3 absolute vetoes and everything else had to go down on a list where it sat for a week...and if the other person still hated the name at the end of the week, it came off the list.
We eventually got down to two name combinations and we held her up and said each name to her in the hospital...and then we went with the combination that she didn't fart at.
Seriously. My child was almost named Ruby Shannon...but she let out a ripper as soon as we said it...we took that as a no. So she ended up with Amelia Regan.

Oo! I'll join in on the unsolicited baby-naming advice! You left comments open, so you must want input, right?
I was gonna jokingly suggest girlifying Truman: Truwoman? Trumana? But as I was reading the comments it occurred to me that turning Truman into Trumyn makes it sound like a girl's name. It maybe looks kinda funny though, and makes use of that whole "turning vowels into y's" thing people don't like, but I really think in this case it kinda works.
I never would have suggested Nora myself, but seeing it here, it's pretty endearing. I also think Aurora is a perfectly fine name.

We didn't know the sex ahead of time. We agreed on a girl name but not on a boy name. Besides, what youngling wouldn't want S.E.A. as her initials. Dreamy.

Not quite Lillian, which sounds old to me.
My friends named their second girl LuLu. Just straight out LuLu. It really suits her.
Another couple I know used Ellewyn (ell-a-win), they call her Ella for short. And another named their girl Katherine but call her Katya (catch-ya)
My girl is named Allison but we call her Allie.
I also thought of your cousin GEORGE! and think Georgie is a cute name as long as the middle name is more feminine to offset Armstrong!
Good luck, I wish you all the best!!

I know I've said it before, but I don't know if you even read this many comments, but anyway. My first little one was not *as* challenging as Leta, but pretty challenging. Colicky (screamy, all the time) until she was at least 5 months old, and continued to be very challenging from there. She's 3 now, and still a spit-fire. We had our second in November, another girl, and this one? Sleeps. Cries if she's hungry. Smiles like you're the one person in the whole world she's been waiting to see (and that's to everyone who glances her direction). But I digress. My point is, my first was fighting to make her presence known even in the womb: kicked and moved around all. the. time. I worried about the second one because she didn't move as much, and I'd have daily panics where I had to lay down to really pay attention and make sure there was movement. So I'm starting to figure that maybe "behavior" in the womb might tell us a lot about the baby's personality.
Which brings me to what I was really wanting to say:
Ooh ooh ooh!! Maybe you're going to have a nice, calm, easy-going child this time! Yay for you!

Like you really need more random name suggestions from the internet, but we're probably done having kids and I could never get my husband to consider what I think is a lovely name for a girl. We always knew the girl name, Emerson (Emma). We both loved that so much. After I found out we were going to have a boy, I had to tell my husband (who did not want to know the sex) because I didn't want to have to make up a name on the fly after he was born (and I also wanted to have THAT discussion about his appendage - to snip or not to snip. No, we didn't).
So Landon it is, after Donald played around with his own name. I gave in. The next boy will be Finnley.

If you like a name, and you repeat it constantly and consistently enough throughout your pregnancy--Jon will have no choice but to agree in the end. That is what I did with my husband regarding our son (Caleb Michael) so that by the time he was born, my husband remarked that the only name he could think of was...tada...Caleb Michael!
I also had low-lying placenta and non-viewable spine issues with my daughter--several ultrasounds later (thanks in part to a horrible ultrasound tech (who burped onions and was NOT pregnant) who I unlucky enough to get EVERY TIME), my placenta moved and my beautiful daughter was born without problem or concern, just as your will be--Congrats!!

VETO, VETO, VETO on using Truman for a girl. The nickname Tru is waaaaaay too trendy sounding. She sounds like the girl who smokes behind the high school and twilights as a stripper.
We had tons of issues naming our girls. With our first there was a process with color coded lists and charts. We had a LOT of time on our hands. With our second we knew what the name would be if it were a boy, but alas. She lived her first four hours as "Baby Girl Davis - breastfeeding." Through all of that we have Seraphim Kate and Lily Joy.
I'm sure you and Jon will come up with something amazing. Especially with us, the peanut gallery, giving our opinions so freely.

Truman would be SO nice for a boy but it's a stretch for a girl. Kinda like Elliot for a girl. But you may be able to think of some feminine variation of Truman and make everybody happy.
We had the same problem with the names though. I was so sure that I was having a boy that when we went in for my first ultrasound and they told me it was a girl my jaw hit the floor. We hadn't thought of a single girl name. My husband and I could NOT agree on anything. This went on for months and I was afraid my daughter would be brought home nameless if we didn't come up with something. The name we finally did agree on: Eliza Katherine. The middle name came from my great-grandmother. Not that you were fishing for name suggestions, but if you want to steal that one I won't mind. If we ever have another girl she will be an Andie.

Your body is not yours anymore. You are busy gestating.
Our name criteria was dignity, and not likely to produce a stupid nickname. We named our twin girls Claire, (because we both loved the name)and Aeron, (for a Celtic battle goddess - during an ultrasound, "Baby B" was kicking her sister in the face with both feet) They are healthy, beautiful girls and I cannot imagine life without them.

Please, please don't name her Truman. Tru is a pretty nickname, but Truman sounds too masculine for a girl. Also, it would be too easy for other children to tease her. Children could call her Tru-man, Tru-woman, Two-woman, Two-man, and many more. Save her from this humiliation.

Our second baby is due June 22nd and we just had our level 2 ultrasound at the perinatologist's office a week ago. If we ever get into baby making we're probably screwed anyway because all our good names are boy names and my husband is obsessed with Lily (thanks to the Pink Martini song) and won't even consider other names and I think it's waaay too girly.

Heather,
My wife and I had a tense few weeks with the placenta previa thing as well. Our baby was a big mover during ultrasounds and had a few long appointments waiting for the right "shot" from the technician. We had chosen a name for both a boy and a girl way before we got pregnant but we wanted to be surprised and when our little girl was finally born, we had to be reminded to check to see if we had a Bernard or a Rita because we were all excited just to have our baby in our arms.

PS
We had a RITA!

Well, since everybody has already suggested pretty much every baby name in the book (and then some), I won't bother, and anyway I wouldn't possibly know what type of name you might actually like enough to consider!
All I can say is, have fun with the automatic name-veto machine! I DO know what that's like, that's all my husband and I did when I was pregnant with my youngest! And we ended up with a name that's kinda "eh" in my opinion, but hey, I'm just happy the kid has a name at all! She could have ended up being called Baby or The Baby for the rest of her life (which is what my stepson's name was until he was damn near 3 years old - how hard is it to call a kid by his name? Granted, it's easier if said kid actually has a name...) Ok, now I'm just rambling! Good luck with the name game (magic 8 ball, anyone?)! I can't wait to find out the final selection!
(hey look, my captcha words are "medicine" and "helen", how hilarious!)

My 4 year old daughter is named Violet Jane, you live far enough away to borrow that.

Ha! My husband did the same exact thing to me as we have been thinking about baby girl names. He was even stricter though - if anyone he knows has a proposed name as a first or middle name then we can't use it. So frustrating! We settled on one name that ended up moving into the Top 10 girl names last year. No way I wanted to have my child be one of a million in her class. So we're on to another name. Not sure I like it yet but I'm saying it a lot to prepare myself. I have +/- 7 weeks to get used to it...

My husband and I couldn't agree on names either...thank God, or one of my boys would be named Rocko. Wish I was joking.
We got one of those huge sheets of paper with sticky on the back...like they use for presentations...and stuck it on the wall. Each of us would write suggestions on the paper and we could cross off as many as we wanted. In the end there was only one name left. That's how we named both of our boys. I still have the papers.
We had a blast making fun of each other's name choices, and in the end, came up with names that worked for both of us.
Good luck with the whole "name game!"

My parents granted me naming rights when my baby sister was born. At 5-years old, I thought it was an honor and, after days of deep deliberation, delivered my choice via an epic poem. Tragically, Mom and Dad then took it upon themselves to edit "Katie Strawberry" into "Katherine Marie", a betrayal that neither my sister or I have forgiven.
Sooo...give me closure and name your little bean "Katie Strawberry"? Or ask Leta what her top five choices are - (allowing room for the requisite Princesses) - and give the kiddo a fun story to tell when she's 29?

My husband is exactly like Jon on the name thing. My sister and I sat and read every girl name from the Bazillions of Names Baby Book and he came up with something terrible about every name.
"I knew a girl named that, she was retarded."
"There's a girl named that in Metal Gear Solid and she's a whore, I don't want our daughter to be a whore."
"My ex-girlfriend was named that... when I was 4."
"I had an ex named that too."
"Your mother will not be able to pronounce that name correctly." (This one is fair. My mom is from the south and Naomi would never be pronounced the same way twice. This is nothing against the south, just the truth about my mom.)
We had exactly one name that we had talked about for ages that both of us agreed to - Elliott. It is a nontraditional name for a girl but we both like it. If we ever have another child and have to go through this naming process again I know I will end up hospitalized for attempting to bludgeon him to death with that damned baby name book.

Funny how things parallel -- I am at 25 weeks, and also had to do a 2nd ultrasound because of partial placenta previa (luckily it resolved). We are also still negotiating on names as well -- he says no ex-girlfriends which seems reasonable right? Well, apparently the girl he kissed in kindergarten counts as an ex . . . really? I had NO IDEA he was such a player and now the name pool is looking pretty limited. Good luck, the baby will let you know when you find the right name!

We had the exact same issue. My husband shot down every name of every person he had ever met, seen or heard of. Ex-girlfriends, family, pets of friends or names that sounded like names of people he knew were also right out.
As a result, we have the world's weirdest baby names. My daughter Brynna is routinely called Brianna or Brine-nah. And my daughter Maren is also known at the drs. office as Marine and Maven.
I do like Truman as the middle name and use Tru. (Of course my husband would kick that out because of the show Tru Calling.)

I laughed inside and thought "this woman is kind of wacky," but you know what? she was right! And no one but the women who have experienced this first-hand know what it's like. I don't mind boys' names for girls, but I wouldn't choose Truman myself, because, hello, it's got the word "man" in it. It's not a crossover name IMO. I also don't like the idea of giving one girl a very feminine name like Leta and another a very masculine name like Truman.
OTOH, I think Trudy is adorable, but I love old-fashioned kinda nerdy names. For about a decade before I had children, I intended to name a girl Phoebe, but then I had two boys.
I was thinking about Leta's Latin origins and so as the wife of a Latin teacher, I will suggest some other Latin names: Clara, Claudia, Sabina, April, Camilla, Cecilia, Margaret, Stella.

Was this post a request for suggestions? If so, might I suggest Grace? It's simple, pretty, has a nice meaning and isn't ridiculously overused. It's old-fashioned without sounding like Crazy Cat Lady. That's what we named our daughter ("Grace", not "Crazy Cat Lady", though that would be a cool name if your name were Frank Zappa), and we love it. We also get a lot of compliments.
It's versatile, too. Gracie is cute and sweet without sounding stupid. Grace is pretty and somewhat serious. That way it works for whatever kind of person she turns into.
The only bad thing is if she turns out to be a complete klutz. Or completely tactless. Then the "Graceless" jokes will start. I should know; my middle name is Hope.

The day of the ultrasound, I almost fell off the table when the doctor told us it was a boy. When my husband said, "Looks like it's Joseph, not Juliana" I told him "we have to talk -- I never did like that name." Being the darling he is, he got over it and we agreed on the "right" name for our boy. (BTW, they both have my maiden name as their middle names, as do I.)
Best of luck with the name thing and now that you are feeling better, enjoy the miracle of being part of the creation of this miracle who will be your daughter.

OK Heather,
As a girl who has gone through life with an androgenous name don't do it. Especially if you have any intention of cutting her hair short in 2nd grade because she refuses to let you brush it. Because then she'll have a boy's name and look like a boy. And about halfway through the year, she'll walk into the girl's bathroom and the girls will squeal "Oooh! There's a boy in here!" and she'll be so traumatized that when she's a teenager she'll do everything she can to prove to everyone that she is ALL GIRL.
My birthmother sensibly gave me a girly name, Heather same as yours, and I wish my adoptive parents would have had the sense to keep it.

My daughter is Chloe Elisabeth. If I'd had another girl someday, I wanted to name her Avery Clementine. I think Clementine is so lovely and old-fashioned.

I love baby names! The one thing we can control about our kids...until they grow up spiting us and changing their names legally!
My daughter-to-be will be named Aoife (ee-fah) Roisin (roh-sheen) because my family is crazy Irish and I think Gaelic names are wonderful. No one will be able to spell it or pronounce it, but I don't care!

I know just what you are going through with the name thing. When we found out we were having a girl, I started listing all the names that I liked. No, no, no was all I got from my husband. When I said I wanted to name her Megan my husband said, "no, Megan reminded him of a red haired, freckle faced, bad tempered irish brat". I found this funny because he is a ginger haired, freckle faced, bad tempered english snot!
We finally settled on Emily because it was as close as I could get to Amelia which was my grandmother's name.

When I moved to the netherlands a year and a half ago, I met some awesomely named women, whose names are utterly unpronouncable unless you are dutch. So, for fun:
Klasien
Regien
Anouk
Marjolein
Jantje

Yeah, I am not down with Truman for a girl. My girl name was Olivia Eleanor, but with Olivia the Pig and the fact that every third girl is named Olivia, I thank god I had a boy.

Even when you have agreed upon names it comes down to the moment. With our last two girls it was in the delivery room after the birth that twice a dark horse name emerged from the pack and became our daughters chosen name. We both agreed to put it on the list but it had not won the first ballet so it sat further down waiting. I think it's hard to pick that right name till you've met and then you just know it becomes instant.
That's how we wound up with Agnes and Doris.....
Ok that's just a goof we actually picked Emeilia and Samantha and we couldn't be happier.

Someone on here (I'm sorry, I don't remember who!) suggested Aura. I think that is really feminine, sweet, and similar to Aurora which Leta liked so much. Plus, it goes really nice with Leta.
Please don't use Truman for a girl!!! Tru is a nice nickname, but can't you find something else for it to stand for?
For the name delimna... my hubby and I each took a couple weeks and seperately compiled a list of names that we each liked, from whatever sources or imagination we wanted. When we were done, we compared the lists, and we had 6 that were the same (or were different spellings of each other.) That list of 6 became the name list we told everyone. We didn't tell anyone at all her name until she was born, even though we knew it month ahead. It was a nice secret to have. :) And we ended up naming our daughter Danica (prn. like the racecar driver), and it suits her perfectly.
Good luck!

Hubs is happy with 3 and so are our bank account and home. (; Can't wait to hear what you name your newest addition.

People are choosing names that are more and more individual these days. I was the only Tori when I was going to school. Every other Victoria got the nickname Vicky and I was happy not to be confused with the other girls.
Truman is an awesome name for a little girl. If she doesn't like it later she can take on her middle name.
I plan on naming my first boy Jeffrey after my boyfriends father but calling him Free because Jeff is such a common name. I'm sure my boyfriends mom will crap herself over my choice but I've come to believe that's my lot in life; to piss off my mother in law.
As for a girl if neither of you are happy with Truman take a look at your family tree. Some of the old Mormon names are pretty cool. I've got Eliza (Noble) and Luna Pearle (my choice for my own future daughter).
Maybe it will take the little one being born before you come up with the right name. Many of my friends have named their children after meeting them for the first time. They said names until the baby reacted by looking at them or smiling and that's what stuck.
Just don't let it get the best of you. Once you stop thinking about it, it will come to you.

My name is unusual, Traca, with a soft c. Pronounced like Trace-uh. But if I was allowed to have a little girl I would name her Alanna, pronounced like Atlanta with no t's.
