An unscheduled ultrasound

Yesterday I had a routine 35-week check-up with my OBGYN, and because my belly had not grown significantly in the last three to four weeks she ordered an ultrasound for this morning so that we could take a look at the size of the baby and the level of amniotic fluid. She seemed a tiny bit concerned, but said that it could just be that the baby had changed positions or something similarly benign. I tried not to worry too much and resisted asking Google what the hell could be wrong with my baby, because you know what Google would say, right? YOU AND YOUR BABY ARE GOING TO DIE, and here is the Wikipedia entry telling you exactly how and why. With pictures and diagrams and links to estate planning.

I had a hard time sleeping, and not just because Leta was up at 2 AM fretting about spiders. For hours I worked through scenarios in my head: what if? And then what? Because you're constantly hearing stories as a pregnant woman that start out with a circumstance as simple as this one and in the end both the mother and the baby have to have a heart transplant. Like, yeah, my doctor thought I was measuring small, and then three weeks later I woke up in Sri Lanka with a hangover and the severed foot of a wild boar tied around my neck.

And then when I did finally fall asleep I had nothing but crazy baby dreams, one in particular in which the ultrasound technician accidentally ruptured my bag of water. In less than an hour I dilated from a zero to a ten, and before they could call my doctor the baby's head was coming out — a head full of blonde, hair-sprayed curls tied into a ponytail with a patriotic scarf — and next thing you know I've given birth to a 17-pound baby who can speak in sentences. And instead of reaching out to hold her, I lean over the side of the bed and start puking green beans.

WHAT THE HELL HAVE I BEEN SMOKING?

Turns out that you can't trust measuring tape, because the ultrasound indicates that the baby is measuring almost five days larger than her actual gestational age. In fact, the technician had to measure her head almost four times because it kept saying her head was almost as big as the head of a baby three weeks older than she is. And I'll just go ahead and tell you that my reaction to that news was less a sense of relief and more of an OUCH.

Also, amniotic fluid looks normal and they estimate she already weighs six pounds. The doctor says it's probably a combination of the way I'm carrying the baby plus my height that makes it seem like my belly is smaller than it should be. I'm now to carry on as if nothing ever happened, and to help with that directive they gave me the cutest ultrasound pictures of her face. I have to say, from these scans she looks a lot like Leta, although her mouth is a little more Hamilton than Armstrong:

EEEEK! THERE'S A BABY IN THERE! Talk about uncontrollable crying! The technician was all, are you okay? And I was all SHE HAS A FAAAAAAACE!

Speaking of crazy dreams, Leta loves to talk to us about her own, and this one was good enough to share with you:

Am I the only one who can't detect a baby face in those pictures? I do see some features on the left side of the top pic that have disturbingly clownish features.
Probably just me because I can't find Jesus in my cornflakes, either.

Great news Heather! My midwife always flipped the measuring tape over so that she couldn't see the number. She felt that this gave her a less biased measurement since she knew how big I should measure. It is always scary when docs have even the tiniest concern, makes you want to go and gestate in a hut somewhere.

But then I read some comments on my way down the page and, man. I just wanted to commend you on how brave it must be to post personal stories despite some truly terrible things people say.

Your experiences have helped me tremendously the last few years and I thank you for doing it every day.

So you haven't enlarged significantly over the past couple of weeks? Children grow in spurts, a lot this month, a little next month - why does this not apply in-utero??

Congrats for surviving the allegedly learned doctors of the modern age....They are taught that anything considered an "outlier" (albeit temporarily) to their charts and grids warrants further investigation - they just don't want a malpractice suit with your name as plaintiff....

I was questioned every time I had an ultrasound about the date of conception because the baby was so big. I am big and tall - one look and you know I am not going to have a wee 5 lb baby - they adjusted my due date 3 times! Finally, a week before due date #2, water broke, 3:30am and off to the OR to purge 10lbs and 13oz of baby - to an amazed on-call Dr. who AGAIN asked if they miscalculated my due date - ARGH!!!

Hi...I rarely comment, but I had to jump in here. I'm a few weeks ahead of you and have had more ultrasounds than I can keep track of. 5? Anyway, it's the same reason...my belly measures small for dates, they flip out and order an ultrasound, baby turns out to be normal sized. I'm not -that- tall, but I've only gained about 25 lbs, which is actually what's supposed to be normal but, in our society today, is NOT the norm. I don't know if it's overly cautious doctors or if the doctors are seeing so many fat and obese women these days that their own perception is skewed but I'm here to say try not to worry! My insurance company is getting a bit snarky about paying for all the ultrasounds.

When I was pregnant with my daughter my routine blood test showed low platelets, which indicates HELLP or liver failure and we were definitely both going to die so they put me in the hospital immediately and started treating me. Then they decided it might be good to re-check the blood. Normal platelet count. "OK never mind, you can go home now." My daughter was and is perfectly normal.

I understand where the docs are coming from since we are a bit nutty in this country with our medical malpractice lawsuits, but MAN do they freak us out.

I'm sorry you had to go through that, though. I love that you can see the baby's face and is that a cross section of her arm bones? (not a toy car) Cool!

OK I've never commented before, but I have to share this with you:

I, too, am tall. At the end of my second pregnancy, my petite doctor looked me over and declared that she didn't think that the bump was growing as it ought, and that I should have an ultrasound. The ultrasound technician told me (at about 2 weeks before my due date) that the baby was measuring at over 9 lbs -- but not to worry, because "I always measure large. The baby won't really be that big." The baby was born a month later (15 days overdue - I was not interested in being induced unless the baby or I was in danger) and weighed ...........drum roll please........11 lbs!

Now that i've scared you to death, I will also say that the labor was infinitely easier than with my 8 lb 11 oz. daughter who arrived after about 21 hours of labor. The 11 pounder popped out about 1/2 hour after we arrived at the hospital. Our car was still sitting at the front door of the hospital with the flashers on....

I wish you a super easy labor, and a happy, healthy baby who sleeps alot!

Oeh yes, those pregnancy standards. Dunno where they come from. From the land of topmodels I think.
During my first pregnancy, the baby was smaller than normal (follows one ultrasound after the other), then I got bitten by a tick - well...apparently I got bitten because I developed Borreliosis (sounds good nah? Antibiotics helped). So I did a full internet research on "Borreliosis during Pregnancy", and found there was only one registered case, and nobody really knew what it could do to your baby. Turnes out it makes pretty, intelligent and tall girls (or was that me?). Then during the second pregnancy there was practically no amniotic fuid. But that didn't matter as Miss A popped out within 30 minutes. Without a mess.
It's all good. You're going to have a spectacular delivery and a sweet baby. No doubt ;)

I'm glad everything is OK with the baby! (and you) I have a very bad tendency to consult Dr. Google which is never a good idea if you are a worrier like me. It's like crack for the worry.

Leta is too cute. We we have the Tink and Cinderella versions of Leta's cup for my girls because I just know you are dying to add them to your collection! ;)

The last dream my five-year-old shared with me: she told me that the Jonas Brothers were making fun of her, sticking their tongues out at her. Kids are awesome, 'specially the princesses. >^.^<

I had the same thing happen to me at the same time in my pregnancy. I am 5'11 and was measuring small and not gaining weight. When my daughter was born, she was 8 pounds 7 oz. and has always measured in the 95th percentile for weight and height. She is now 20 months and weighs 32 pounds. I'm glad everything is going as it should! Can't wait to 'meet' your little girl!

    I'm glad everything is okay.

I once googled broken toe since it was hurting like the dickens and Google told me that I may possibly lose my entire foot which made me panic and I would constantly ask my husband if he'd still love me if I only had one leg. I'm no longer allowed to Google.

Your daughter is adorable. My son was in the room when I watched the video and he swears that Leta is in his class. I explained that no, I think he's mistaken and he's all, "But she is Mommy, that's Emily and she sits next to Gabriel." My poor confused son.

My sister-in-law is due around the same time as you I believe. She is currently 32 weeks pregnant with TWIN girls! They are going to induce her around 37 weeks, as she has been on strict bedrest for 4 weeks now. They measured them this week and both weigh 4 lbs....it has been fun keeping up with your pregnancy through here and then seeing hers also. Best wishes for your pregnancy!

Hoping you have an easy and uneventful next few weeks and glad everything was okay.
I've been a reader for several years and never understood what it was you did to piss off so many people. Do you have an evil twin we don't know of, who goes around kicking puppies? I...just don't get it.

I'm glad all is well! We had a scare early on, and everything was fine, but we got to have an ultrasound every visit after that, "just in case", so I was secretly thrilled to see the little nugget more often!

While I was pregnant I had to stop Googling for that very 'you are going to die' reason. At first I checked everything the doc said and then I finally imposed a temporary ban just to keep my sanity!

I'm glad everything is ok and can't wait to see videos of the newest cutie.

It is the soulful eyes of Leta that just KILL me whenever I see a picture of that oldest child of yours. She is so cute I could take a bite! I'm sure the 2nd one will be just as special.

As a mother of 3 children, 24 yrs, 19 yrs and 5 yrs I can tell you that you WILL have your favorite - for some reason you just connect with 1 child more. Doesn't mean you love the other children any less but 1 child will touch your soul in a way that no other child does.

I wish you and your family the best!

Baby? I can't see any Baby face. I suck at these kinds of puzzles. In the first picture I can see a robot stretching out his robot arm,and in the second picture I see a tall dachsund with an ear on its back. Can't wait for the digital pictures. I'm glad everything is well.

You should tell your beautiful girl to never worry about pink-eyed monsters, because THEY'RE ALL GONNA DIE anyway.

I'm so glad the ultrasound went well! I have to say that a bad ultrasound was the scariest thing I've been though. Grow little peanut, grow!
