Like you, I make peace with the previous year at New Year’s by listing my accomplishments. They are less larger-than-life than yours, but significant nonetheless.

Example: giving up the facial products I’ve used since my early 30′s for more age-appropriate ones; telling a friend (who buys everything I do) “I’m no longer answering the ‘where did you get it’ question;” not letting another friend take advantage of my generosity; shifting the bulk of my prayers from requests to thanksgivings.

Your column is an immensely entertaining pick-me-up.
I wish you and your family health, love, peace and joy in the New Year.

You make me smile every time again. Most of the time it is for your fantastic exaggeration capabilities, but this time it was a loving smile, seeing the pictures of your lovely family.
I’ve been following you for two years or so, and after (finally) reading your book, I have now decided to read every entry on your blog you ever posted. It will take me some time, yes, but I just love reading about your life. Please don’t ever stop…
All the best for you and your family in 2010!

  • Fosterhood

As I watch the photos I say to myself “Ooo, that’s my favorite. No, no- THIS is my favorite.” I give up, such amazing photos of 2009. Congrats on all that you’ve accomplished this year!

  • leahofdp

my son is sitting with me watching this video and tears are streaming down my face, with joy. i’m guessing that the video represents what’s really important in our hearts, family and friends.

i have to say it’s good to see you having a joy in your life, it is well deserved. you earned them by walking through so much hard stuff.

i think you are awesome, always have and always will.

    xoxo,
    leah of dp

I remember reading your website on my friend’s NEW
Iphone (2 or so yrs ago) in the car as we drove to see our friend that lives 2+ hrs away. We would meet her halfway and the drive always seemed so long when there was traffic. I read the Raccoon fiasco to my husband and friend as we sat in traffic. We all laughed so hard. After that, your blog has become a permanent bookmark. Thanks for all the great posts. Especially the washing machine chain!!

  • brendadog

OMG first it gave me the goosebumps and then it made me cry. Seriously, at work. AND I DONT EVEN KNOW YOU. Except, of course, biblically speaking.

Great pics, great song, Happy New Year Armstrong Family!!!

  • P

That last photo says it all. What joy!

  • 3mw

Poetic timing of the lyrics “Ill break down if you come around” with Marlo’s delivery photos.

  • Tricia

I was holding it together pretty well until the yellow roses in the rain. Somehow all the beauty, joy and pain of the year is perfectly summed up in that photo… Excellent montage; thanks for sharing your lives with us!

    HAPPY NEW YEAR, ARMSTRONGS!

  • truman08

Beautiful montage and beautiful photographs. You have an amazing family!

  • Natalie

The picture of Granny Boone and Marlo made me burst into tears!

Happy New Year, Armstrongs! Thanks for letting us be a part of your lives.

  • zerilian

I don’t care what the haters will say – I loved this photo summary of the year. I loved it for the composition but also for the meaning. It was wonderful. I think you deserve all the honors bestowed upon you this year and I wear my Dooce tee (purchased in 2006) with great pride!

  • Karen Olson

Thanks for all the great stories this year and especially the Chuck photos. That is one great dog. And I am not a dog person.

Happy New Year and all best wishes to you and your family!

  • Suz

Heather, what a beautiful tribute to 2009. Thank you so much for sharing your insight, your life, your family, your stories, your art and everything else with us. It’s such a privilege to be a part of this as it brings so much joy and laughter (and sometimes tears).
Happy New Year to you, Jon, Leta, Marlo, Chuck and Coco. I hope 2010 is even better than 2009 for all of you!

  • lunacydress

Loved the photos, even if they made me teary-eyed. It was a great year and I hope yours, mine and everyone’s 2010 is even better!

sounds like a crazy year- unlike yours my work this year suffered a great deal due to the economy.. I am hoping manufacturers will start to look for more stuff soon and the retail market rebound otherwise I think I am finding a new business to be in!

Wishing you the Best in 2010- I am hoping its the best year yet!!

  • Vander

Beautiful. Thank you for everything you share with us. Happy New Year to you and yours.

  • bethcharette

I am so impressed with the kinds of lives folks like you lead.

My first impression is that you are living the life that the female lead on Bones, the TV series, is leading.

    And, for that, congratulations.

As for me, I am studying for a degree in Business with an emphasis in environmental sustainability. The classes are amazing.

I am also a fan of ToysPeriod.com They have been good to me and have sponsored a full scholarship to Linda Christas College in my name.

So, I wouldn’t be being grateful if I didn’t at least leave a tag for them, since you do allow those.

ToysPeriod is a leading online shop specializing in lego sets and model railroad equipment.

They also downplay the help they give to poor kids like me who wouldn’t have a chance without good hearts like theirs.

So to them, to you and to me HAPPY NEW YEAR

  • earthtoholly

That was a beautiful video—a gentle recap of a year’s worth of living that you can forever revisit. Though full of happy times, it was strangely sad…

May the Dooce household have another great year!

  • chefkathy

    Heather,

Loved the 2009 recap – and that last picture of you and Marlo is the best picture of you that I’ve ever seen – and I’ve been reading your blog for many years. You look beautiful, and I’m not just sucking up, I swear!

    Kathy

  • bethcharette

I think I was trying too hard the first time I left a comment here, and fouled up the link that I wanted to leave in honor of my scholarship sponsor.

I hope I am reading the instructions appropriately regarding leaving links.

However, before that, I did want to express again my awe at the productive events you describe in your life for 2009.

Hopefully, one day, when I have completed my education, I will be able to look back on a year and be able to say I’ve been on the equivalent of the reigning Oprah.

I am in tears, and SO inspired. Thank you, for this and everything you do on this site to keep us laughing, crying, rooting for you and generally being peripheral parts of your lives. It’s been an incredible ride, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.

  • slynns

Happy New Year Dooce and family! Thank you for doing what you do.

And heaven help us if Leta ever meets up with my six-year-old son Ben.

  • alfiola

Amazing and inspiring! I loved watching every minute!

  • Karen Chatters

Heather, that was beautiful! Thank you for sharing.

(I did especially like how you threw in the doggy porn, good stuff!)

    Happy New Year!

  • Casey

Lovely photo recap, Heather. Happy to see the blog (can we still call it a blog?) doing so well and your list of credentials is hot!

I love that I read you way back when.

Happy New Year. That last picture is fabulous.

  • reymiland

It’s all well and good Heather, but what have you done for others? What have you given back and expected nothing in return?

It is the service one gives to others, without expectation of reward, that will give true salvation.

I hope the New Year finds you and yours healthy.

  • marnilla

Wish I COULD see your 2009 recap but will have to wait for an upgrade.

I wish you and yours well. I enjoy reading you, so keep doing what you’re doing!

    Best wishes,

    Marnilla

  • Table_4_Six

    Beautiful.

  • Laurel

That was beautiful. My year sucked ass, but I squirted out a tear or two watching your family doing what you do best — living, and sharing uncompromisingly the highs and lows with the rest of us. If I were religious, I’d say “God bless,” but I’ll go with, “Happy New Year” instead. You deserve. it.

  • PaigeWAydensMama

I just watched your slideshow to the tune of the chorus of “I’m Alright” by Kenny Loggins being played repeatedly from a stuffed, mechanized gopher to entertain my 18-month old so I could sit still for 3 minutes. Possibly not the effect you were going for, but the pictures are still beautiful. I’m really glad my sister gave me your book last year (Happy New Year!). Your writing and photos have definitely been highlights in my sometimes mundane days. Thanks!

  • MaryJoRs

I thought that video was beautiful. I kept thinking to myself though… poor Heather. I hope she has the same number of photo’s of Leta and Marlo because you KNOW someone will count, and you will be accused of favoritism. HAHA Thank you for sharing your family and your life with us. Wishing you a blessed 2010!

  • anya

Beautiful! I’d love to see a picture of you Heather with both the girls – I don’t think I’ve ever seen one.
    Happy New Year!

  • lisac

    Hi Heather,

Just wanted to thank you for sharing another year with us. Wishing you a happy healthy new year!

  • tinabee

    that was just beautiful (echo..echo..echo..)!
ive enjoyed reading for the last several years, thank you for sharing your life with us :)

  • CAKris

Wow! What an awesome slide show. I just discovered your blog today. (Thanks to the Time Magazine list.) You now have a new fan in the SF Bay area. Happy New Year!

  • maeghan

My husband gave me your book for Christmas (after my best friend told me about your website) and I just wanted to write and tell you how much I loved it. You are truly an inspiration and you have an insane gift. Keep up the talent – we all love hearing from you. All the best to you, Jon and the kids in 2010.

  • misheru

Beware that dimple; it’s as dangerous as Coco’s head position for requiring obeisance and treats.

  • Jamie Bray

    Happy New Year Armstrongs!

  • barbara

What a beautiful photo montage. Your photos are one of the main reasons I visit the site…I love them.

You probably get this a lot, but you should really smile with your teeth in your photos. You have such a beautiful smile!

I wish your family all the best in 2010.

  • Angela MainMoscow

Armstrongs Thank you for sharing your stories, your photos and the your ability to put a smile on so many people’s faces. Happy New Year!
