We have had numerous conversations about this in our house. And yes, while A LOT of mainstream music seems like complete crap now, I’ve realized that my husband & I never really listened to mainstream music anyhow. I’m just this side of 40 & growing up in Central Illinois the radio choices were classic rock, pop rock or the weak-signalled college alternative station you hoped you could get on your radio. We sought out music like Husker Du, The Smiths, The Replacements etc. & we still do. There’s amazing music out there today but you have to go farther than the radio & sure as hell farther than that crapstastic fiasco MTV has turned out to be (that’s a whole other tirade completely!) It makes me laugh when our 7 yr. old daughter pretends her barbies are trying out for The Voice & she has them singing Blondie, The Alabama Shakes & Patty Smith right along with Katie Perry. It may be a bizarre selection but it’s her experiencing music her own way & that’s ok. At least she’s ahead of me when I was that age. I LOVED Shawn Cassidy at 7 & she thinks Justin Beiber’s a hack so there’s hope…
