I can barely stand up on my feet in just shoes during the winter, let alone tryin' to balance on a board or long sticks. Winter sports are for people with some level of control over their own bodies. They have people like me to make the hot chocolate and be naked in the lodge when the skiiers and 'boarders are done.

B4E: You know, I agree with you about having people like me being the ones that make hot cocoa. I was going to offer to be the one hanging out in the lodge with you while everyone else skis and 'boards, but then being naked in a ski lodge sounds like it would REALLY REALLY COLD. Beautiful! Both my kids ski, and they love it! They scare me when their on skis. They like to do crazy stuff. They went last week, and the 6 year old went over 'jumps', the 10 year old did 360's. Scares me just thinking about it.

Heather, that picture is absolutely beautiful. It makes me homesick for Pennsylvania, especially since it might get to 80 degrees in Houston today. I tried skiing once, and I can say that the bunny hill doesn't teach you crap. I got on the "Beginner's Slope" and went flying down that hill at Mach 10. I almost crashed into the building at the bottom of the mountain. I never fell, though!

B4E: No, further South. The Oval beach I went to was in Saugatuck, MI or maybe Douglas... close to a really BIG hill with over 200 stairs going up the side of it with something like a huge golf ball on the top of it.
CK - Curling is like shuffle board on ice. And you through the rocks with your whole body, not just your hand. It's REALLY boring to watch, but actually quite fun to play.
my mom and i were watching part of a women's curling competition on tv yesterday. we are still trying to figure out how they slide on one foot and push themselves with the other and not fall flat on their asses.
I've never heard of snow called "pow" before--and I'm up in Canada, the land of snow--but if it works for you.....

I married into a family of avid pro skiers. For the second time in my life I tried it a few weeks ago at the resort they ski at and I had 5 year olds whipping past me and doing figure 8's. Can you say discouraging? Smacked right into a dad who saw me coming and shielded his 2 year old from the impact of the DC comet. Nothing injured but my pride!
I have been reading this website for a few months now,but just recently started reading the comments section. I noticed yesterday that some girl was also new and suggested something to dooce about autism. It didn't come across as rude, just compassionate to me. I'm just wondering, are we not allowed to make suggestions on here, even if they are heartfelt? Is that why the comments got turned off? I don't really have a problem with it if heather doesn't appreciate adivice, but I just want to know the unwritten rules so I don't piss anyone off. Thanks

I tried skiing once, and I can say that the bunny hill doesn't teach you crap. I got on the "Beginner's Slope" and went flying down that hill at Mach 10. I almost crashed into the building at the bottom of the mountain. I never fell, though!

BFE - you would have enjoyed watching me CURL Saturday night from the warmth of the spectator booth (they serve hot choco and kaluha). First time I've curled in 12 years and I'm happy to say I only fell twice.
