the smell of my desperation has become a stench

Chuck, crackbaby

As part of ongoing experimentation with features on this website which recently has included opening up comments, purchase of a dedicated server to handle bandwidth, and new mastheads every month, I’ve decided to expand this site’s content to include weekly video and audio posts. We experimented with audio before (here and here), and that will continue soon once we figure out how to capture a clip that doesn’t sound like it’s being recorded inside a jet engine.

Today will be the first in a weekly series of small video posts, and since this is still in the experimental stage I’m starting off with a very small video (with no accompanying audio) just in case our server explodes from the downloads.

This clip was recorded in April 2002 in Los Angeles on our Nikon Coolpix 990 before we ever bought a proper camcorder. Chuck was probably eight weeks old, and it was during this incorrigible phase of his life that I asked the Lord every morning to give me strength not to drop kick him off the top of our two-story apartment building.

Click on this screenshot to view the video clip:

UPDATE: If you don’t have Quicktime installed or are otherwise unable to view the video here, you can see it over here.

OMG he is SO cute!!!! Okay, I’m generally a lurker, but the cuteness of his puppy face made me so happy that I had to say something!!

I have been wanting to put little movies on my site too. Curious about how you did it…if you feel like sharing the mojo.

One of my best friends is mormon and my husband is an almost x mormon, so I absolutely die rolling on the floor laughing at so many of your stories. We have kids together so you can imagine the weird fights we have over owning a coffee maker and how this may or may not influence said children!!!

    Aaaaaak! Can’t breathe…. TOO CUTE….

I hope you can live with the fact that you have killed me.

    I am dead.

Well, youtube didn’t work for me either, but that picture of Puppy Chuck is too freakin’ cute. I can only imagine what havoc he is wreaking in the video…

And DeafMomWorld…I don’t think Heather meant she was going to solely do audioblog entries, but they would make an occasional appearance.

ooh! little chuck is so cute. he’s cute now, too, but there’s something special about puppies, yaknow?

Boy he was a scrappy little bugger, wasn’t he? SO FREAKING CUTE! If I had dog ovaries, they would be itchy right now. Ruffy is 4 and I would love a new puppy to add to this chaos, but um, No.

Ahhh… playing ‘bite the camera’ we’re good at that. But our favorite game is ‘run and hide’ from the camera.
Chuck is adorable now but as a baby he was blindingly sweet.

Too freaking adorable! As a former streaming media specialist and current stay at home momma, feel free to pick my brain for any video advice!

my dog does a similar ‘bite the camera’ thing.

Only the camera has been replaced with my hand, socks, underwear, face, left thigh, foot, misc. toys, knapsack, and yes… homework. Do you know how stupid I felt telling my high school english teacher tha my dog ate my assignment??

My 2¢: I love reading your blog & I enjoy Blurbomat but I already subscribe to more podcasts than I can listen to. Personally, I would likely not listen to/watch any clips you upload on a regular basis (the occassional cut Chuck & “You got the internet on that thing?” will be enjoyed).

omg, i somehow missed that you adopted chuck as a pup. i thot he came full-size. i don’t need any encouragement to get a dog (i have 4, and my eye is on #5) but he is just adorable.

Oh – what a cute/annoying little pup! Attacking the camera AND looking absolutely adorable at the same time… only pups can do that!
I look forward to other movies!

I love other peoples’ puppies. My own puppies would drive me nuts. I suppose it’s like being a grandparent and being able to give them back when you’re done oohing and awwing over the cutidity.

I’m loving Chuck, of course, but most of all, I’m loving the fact that there were THREE DIFFERENT FLOOR SURFACES in your old apartment. You must have had some mad Swiffer skills.

Chuck was very cute as a puppy, but I’m supposing you had someone perform an exorcism on him, because he certainly was acting like a dog possessed!

    2006/03/22 at 4:58 pm

Oh, adorable pup! I wish I have a pup just like yours! I remember the good old days of chasing around a little puppy, going through the training terrors, sigh.

Anyway, I’m begging you, if you plan to change your blogs into audio, I’d die of deprivation!!! See… I’m deaf and can’t hear to save my life. Oh, Dooce, oh can you take mercy and leave your fantastic blog same as usual so I can read in enjoyment everyday?

Oh Dooce, have mercy on me!

I can practically SMELL the puppy breath! And the pee puddles in the corners, the overpowering smell of Resolve, sweat and stress. The puppy years are a great training ground for the toddler years. Hey, I wonder if rolled up newspapers work on 3 year olds or not…..

    Dammit Heather!

I have been fighting off the urge to get a dog for months now and you go and ruin all that hard work by showing me the most adorable thing I HAVE EVER SEEN.

I love Chuck now in his angst ridden teenage form. The sight of him as a little ball of puppy fluff is just too much for my heart to take.
*sigh* I am just going to have to get a puppy. I hope my cats understand…

Oh how I wish there was a breeder for “Chuck’s”. He is the cutest dog I have EVER seen. No joke…

Heather, LOVE the video feature, and the audio features were adorable, too, and I didn’t care if they did sound like you were in a jet engine.

The youtube feature works just fine. If you find the hosting on your site takes too much space, make us go to youtube.

    Thanks for sharing!

I am now officially in love with Chuck! I can’t believe how perky his ears were when he was so teeny. I am having strong urges lately to adopt a new puppy – thank goodness there are no baby Chucks around

The amazing degree of cuteness in your adorable Chuck-pup is how I ended up with four dogs. It started with kids until my husband said “That’s it! NO more kids! I don’t care how cute they are!” Now it’s me telling him, “That’s it! NO more dogs! I don’t care how cute they are!”

He was as lovely then as he is today. 🙂 I want another puppy! Gimme gimme!

My poor old dog is sick with cancer and very old, but he still has puppy written all over his face. He was the cutest puppy, a big fluffball of golden retreiver. 🙂

    I wasn’t around in the puppy-Chuck days so — awwww… what a cutie.

Well, I mean, I was around as in ALIVE but I wasn’t a reader-of-the-blog back then. I wasn’t around HERE.

Just tell me to shut-up. I’d understand. haha

A lurker who has read your site like a human novel and loved it more than any reality show (including Rollergirls), this is my first post.

This video is very cute and almost makes you forget that there is such a thing as “Post Puppy Depression” It also tries to erase the memory that said syndrome can only be alleviated with prescription drugs for both you and said puppy!!

Keep on Keepin on! (sometimes I am such a dork!)

I’m so glad you opened up comments – I love you/your site and Chuck is beyond adorable as a puppy, which probably played a role in saving him from being chuck’d out the window

Hi. I’m Heather B. Armstrong, and this used to be called mommy blogging. But then they started calling it Influencer Marketing: hashtag ad, hashtag sponsored, hashtag you know you want me to slap your product on my kid and exploit her for millions and millions of dollars. That’s how this shit works. Now? Well… sit back, buckle up, and enjoy the ride.
