pink

Since the whole house is already littered with it

I’m friends with a lot of parents who are very serious about deconstructing traditional gender roles when it comes to their kids. They don’t want their girls playing with anything princess-themed or their boys pretending that a paint roller is a gun. I get this, I totally do, and I have a lot of respect for what they are trying to do. It’s just, well… I happen to be a really lazy liberal.

I never introduced Leta to Disney princesses, but she saw a lunchbox at preschool and was instantly hooked. So I indulged her. It’s a phase she grew out of just as fast as she fell into it. Both of my girls love pink despite the fact that I have never gone out of my way to put it into their wardrobe. In fact, Leta wore a lot of “boyish” hand-me-downs from a neighbor for the first two years of her life. But there it is: the pink cast, the pink bedspreads in their rooms that they picked out, the pink section of the clothing store that sucks them in with the sound of the last drops emptying the drain at the bottom of a tub (that had just been filled with pink bubble bath).

So, pink it is. They may or may not grow out of it. It’s something I’m leaving up to them. (Things that do not fall under this parenting technique: neither of them are allowed to attend BYU, listen to Linkin Park, or learn to whistle.)
