West Elm

For your mum

Normally in the weeks leading up to Mother’s Day I feel like I have been slogging through a field of mud two-feet deep because the winter has systematically beat me to the ground. This year I looked at the calendar and thought GLAD I LOOKED UP. Holy crap. Mother’s Day is next week. More than any other holiday during this season, this one for some reason makes me feel like I survived the worst of it. Maybe that’s symbolic. Maybe I’m equating winter with my first year of motherhood when so much was painfully disorienting, like light bouncing off of new snow and hitting me directly in the eyes. I feel like from here I can make it through any last lingering snow showers.

Again, you can always ignore these suggestions and go with a bouquet of flowers. Your mother will love them (as long as she is not allergic to them and if that’s the case BE A BETTER CHILD AND PAY ATTENTION ALREADY). Flowers, a homemade card, maybe show up with an unexpected bag of groceries. Take her car, have it washed and secretly fill it with gas. Call her. Give her a hug if she lives nearby. Tell her you’re glad she survived winter.
