A year in landscapes
Back in January I was out walking the dogs when I snapped a photo on my phone and posted it to Instagram with the caption “January landscape.” I didn’t know at the time that I was initiating a personal project that would last the entire year. Every month since then I’ve tried to take a photo of a moment outside in Utah that captures what it’s like here that time of year. I suppose I could have taken one photo of a frustrated tourist trying to find liquor on a Sunday and every month just photoshopped some seasonal clothing on his body.
Some months were hugely successful—the photo I posted in October is my most liked photo on Instagram—while other times I’d completely forget that I had given myself this challenge and then scurry around in the last few hours of the last day of the month. I’m looking at you, MAY. Although to be fair I did travel four times that month and most of the landscape I did see was not in Utah AND THOSE ARE THE RULES. According to my butt.
Instagram for me is a playground. It’s a medium where I can learn new tricks and play with apps and learn to frame scenes in squares. I follow a lot of people I do not know, photographers who lead me to other photographers, and I love studying what they have done. Today I wanted to share with you my year in landscapes and point you in the direction of a few of my favorite photographers to follow. Enjoy falling down this rabbit hole:
