the smell of my desperation has become a stench

Chuck, crackbaby

As part of ongoing experimentation with features on this website which recently has included opening up comments, purchase of a dedicated server to handle bandwidth, and new mastheads every month, I’ve decided to expand this site’s content to include weekly video and audio posts. We experimented with audio before (here and here), and that will continue soon once we figure out how to capture a clip that doesn’t sound like it’s being recorded inside a jet engine.

Today will be the first in a weekly series of small video posts, and since this is still in the experimental stage I’m starting off with a very small video (with no accompanying audio) just in case our server explodes from the downloads.

This clip was recorded in April 2002 in Los Angeles on our Nikon Coolpix 990 before we ever bought a proper camcorder. Chuck was probably eight weeks old, and it was during this incorrigible phase of his life that I asked the Lord every morning to give me strength not to drop kick him off the top of our two-story apartment building.

Click on this screenshot to view the video clip:

UPDATE: If you don’t have Quicktime installed or are otherwise unable to view the video here, you can see it over here.

That is adorable, but um, my 116 pound 11 month old Saint Bernard still does that, and it’s not so cute anymore.

Wanna trade??? She can pull you around town in a cart, people would be so jealous….

    I should clarify my comment:

If you try to view the clip using Firefox, your browser won’t know what to do. If you try to view the clip using Internet Explorer, it will know that you need Quicktime, and it will allow you to install it without having to also install iTunes which you HAVE to install if you use the Download link provided by Heather.

Once you have installed Quicktime, it will work with any browser.

Hope that helps! If it doesn’t help, please feel free to delete this comment at will, or print it out and back over it in your car, or whatever. . .

I clearly missed the point of the video, because the first words out of my mouth were. “Let’s get a puppy!!!!”

This picture of tiny Chuck has brought back a sudden menory of this toy dog that my uncle gave me. I loved it. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to view the reel.

I can’t believe that’s the same dog you have now. What a little freak. What’s your secret to the successful pooch you have now? Dogger Zapper? Bark collar? Boot-camp? I have two bastards, one is the instigator, the other is just dumb.

    Damn I love Chuck!

mmmfrogs you need Quicktime to see a .mov file.

If you install it using Internet Explorer it will save you having to install iTunes with it like it makes you di with Firefox. . .

I am a bit techy-dumb, but what type of media player do I need to have installed to view the video file? The usuals (Windows media player, RealPlayer, etc.) aren’t recognizing the .mov file extension.

    chuckles mcbuckles!

i bet you had thought “how do parents deal with crying babies in the middle of the night? this puppy won’t sleep through the night and it’s killing me!”

but oh, how the cuteness is worth it.

Dude, that dog is so cute I want to put him on a hamburger bun and weave a fanciful crown of parsley garnish about his little doggy ears. Which is to say, in Kentucky parlance, I could just eat him up. 😉

Also: thanks for opening comments. Shwing!

All these “cute!” posts (mine included) remind me of the episode of the Newlyweds where Jessica and her mom are shopping and say “that’s cute”, “CUUUTE!”, “oh, cute” something like 349 times in a one-minute clip.

So let’s say it again: Awwww, cuuuuuuuuuuuute!

    I heart puppy-Chuck!

We introduced my roommates dog to her Chinchilla yesterday (they’ve always had a cage between them). He kept lunging at her (like Chuck was). We kept insisting Chinchilla’s were not in fact tasty snacks, when we realized all he was trying to do was lick her ear.

Moral of the story…if someone lunges at you, maybe they’re just trying to lick your ear. 🙂

Heather, you’re my freaking idol, I swear….I want a puppy and a baby as cute as yours! I already have a hot geeky good-smelling husband, but I’m damned impatient for the rest. And you make me count blessings: that as bad as I thought being raised Catholic was, it wasn’t BYU/Mormonism et al!

    Puuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuppy chuck!

I think that for the next video, it should be of you guys getting Chuck to stay still for either the
    A) noodles around his snout
    B) pick up sticks on his head
    C) clothing on his head ala. “king chuck” which by the way was utterly hilarious
or perhaps how he stands still while you put treats on his nose. Does he then flick them up and catch them in his mouth? I’ve always wondered about that.

Just a few ideas. Thanks for the morning dose of cuteness. PUuuuuuuuuuuuuuuppy chuck is always a winner.

This sentence is so beautifully written! “I asked the Lord every morning to give me strength not to drop kick him off the top of our two-story apartment building.”

I prayed this many times when my puppy came home.

    So funny!

i swear, chuck is the cutest dog EVER.

I love this. I love how he snaps at the camera, like he is trying to eat it. God, I want a puppy. Except I know I would want to drop kick it and I live in a first story condo, so I wouldn’t have that second story option. I lived with my sister years ago when she got a puppy, and that little guy was the loudest, most pathetic creature I have ever encountered. Unfortunately for him and for all of us who put up with him, he was not too smart and was a constantly horny dog, and he would dry hump his little green blanket CONSTANTLY. Somehow that adorable puppy phase is overcome when they start dry humping inanimate objects. Luckily for you, Chuck looks sounds like a very cool, intelligent, and thankfully nut-less dog. And he is STILL just as cute as an adult dog. Thanks for sharing the video!

Aw, widdle Chuckie. Too bad you don’t have one of him wizzing on the floor. That would certainly ensure a catastrophic meltdown of the server, b/c who doesn’t want to see a puppy mess up your floor???

The Leta audio… OMG, now I have to pick up all the itty-bitty little ovary pieces….
Your audio…. aahhhh, as my husband says, “embrace your Redneck roots…”
