the smell of my desperation has become a stench

New Tunes Tuesday

Yeah! This is a new feature, or something. Maybe I’m just really excited about some new music I heard recently. And now, maybe you’re the victim! Let’s call it CSI:BLOG.

You guys, I have a lot of new music to share with you. And the thing is, the thing is, if you knew of this stuff and didn’t share it with me I’d be mad at you. So I don’t want you to be mad at me, not like you and I are the same person, BUT OMG WE ARE!

You have to hear this song. But because I am embedding a YouTube video, it means you can ignore it. If you do, you are totally missing out and I will reluctantly refrain from calling you a dillpimple.

Because you will be missing out. Listen to this: according to this guy’s Wikipedia entry, he was born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Florida. But when you hear this you will turn to me like Jon did, like Jon who served his Mormon mission in 1984 in Manchester, England and heard The Smiths practicing in a garage for one of their first albums, and say, “That’s Morrissey!”

No, actually, it’s not. It’s George Lewis Jr. And this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written (or more accurately, it’s Twin Shadow with “Slow”):

“I don’t wanna, believe, but be, in love
I don’t wanna, be, believing, in love”

(P.S. The video is not meant to be taken seriously. Close your eyes and listen to it, otherwise all hate mail should be sent to my mom.)

What happened to this site? It used to be so funny/witty/edgy…and best of all …subversive.

Was that a flashing Febreeze ad I just saw dance across my screen?

    Make me sad.

I saw this video a few months back on Grizzly Bear’s blog and was blown away. And then watched all the old Calvin Klein commercials that it was based on (also posted on I wish I had more time to devote to music and being cool.

Funny, I was going to send you the “Tyrant Destroyed” song by Twin Shadow a few weeks back. Every time I hear that song I picture your Tyrant in my head. Hah!

    2011/03/22 at 10:58 am

Love it. I’m always looking for new music but my radio is always tuned to NPR and sadly then I never get to hear new music.

Thanks. Video not bad enough for hate mail.

I want to share a song with you miss Dooce. These kids are from here, Lafayette, Louisiana and one night we will be watching them on SNL. Listen to it LOUD and listen to the entire song. They’re called the GIVERS. Happy music:-)

Oh Heather: please, please, please tell me Jon tried to convert Morrissey.

You’re right, the video is a little weird but I appreciate his denim vest. Amazing song!

Where do I sent the hatemail if »This video is not available in your country«? Gaaaah. It was the same with at least half of the videos in the other thread, too. So frustrating. I’ll have to try and find it somewhere else. Wish me luck.

No, sorry, I love you, but my ears still hurt from that Robyn-bad-trip-to-the-80s from a couple of weeks ago 🙁 It’s okay, we can still be friends (*majorcough*) even if we don’t like the same music.

And as long as your captcha makes me laugh with Buipa if Pdi, I swear this thing KNOWS when I need that just perfect WTF moment :p

I love Twin Shadow’s Castles in the Snow off of the same album. I want to make out with that song.

I think you’d like Two Door Cinema Club, their album Tourist History has been on heavy rotation on my iPod.

Also, check out You’re a Wolf by Sea Wolf–they are totally channeling Eliot Smith in this song. Their entire Leaves in the River is a beautiful album, very relaxing.

Love it! Sounds so 80s!!! I even looked for it (immediately after listening) on grooveshark and added it to my playlist. I enjoy finding new music and sometimes the best stuff I find comes from a friend who says, “You gotta hear this song”

One that I have been addicted to lately is called “Skinny Love” By Bon Iver.

And the thing is, the thing is, if you knew of this stuff and didn’t share it with me I’d be mad at you.

    I love this. 😀

I’d love to see this be a regular Dooce feature.

I’ll share this and watch you, not literally of course, recoil…though I’m sure you will. I just won’t be able to see it.

Should I be glad I can’t watch the video here? At least I can listen because I have the album (which I loved) but it’s nice to get recommendations of songs you already know. Gives you a chance to revisit and discover something new about it.

  • Pluckychick

    2011/03/22 at 3:26 pm

Dude. He truly is channeling Morrissey. Nice crotch shots. Although I get the distinct feeling I ( 43 year old female) was not the intended target audience.

    2011/03/22 at 4:04 pm

Heather, I almost didn’t watch it, but I didn’t want to be a dillpimple. I’m glad I watched it! Thanks for convincing me!

I was a total nerd as a kid, and the oldest child in my family. I had no musical direction except my parents (was very sheltered) so my big musical influences until junior high were The Carpenters, Madonna and Classical music. I have also never really listened to any Morrisey music, but I have to say, when I listened to the song, it made me think of The Cure… Am I totally off?

I live in Austin with my husband, and we saw Twin Shadow play SXSW last Friday night. It’s always a plus to know a band is just as fantastic live as they are on a recording!

If you’re into this 80s-sounding awesomeness, check out

I don’t get it — why is it NSFW? I was nervous the whole time that with all those crotch shots, he was going to whip it out or something!

    2011/03/22 at 9:40 pm

Starla Dear – maybe it depends on where you work, LOL!

Anyway, wow, nice! Thank-you for posting it. And yep, very reminscent of Morrisey.

    2011/03/22 at 10:07 pm

ahhh! OMG! I don’t know what was more shocking – that voice out of that guy or that Jon would hear the Smiths practicing in Manchester.

This is not a new song, but it’s one of my faves of all time:

    2011/03/22 at 10:09 pm

As much as I completely and totally love you, your taste in music absolutely confounds me. Maybe it’s just me. I’m sorry.

  • Mandy

    2011/03/22 at 11:17 pm

Wow! And I don’t say that lightly. I actually got goose pimples the song is so, I don’t know, yearning? passionate? GRRRR? Can’t quite find the words except it totally does it for me. Everything, the music, him, his voice, his drumming. I’ve been swept back twenty five years ago to my one sided love affair with Morrissey and Bernard Sumner from New Order.

    LOVE it. Wow. Really.
I had to go get it in iTunes right away. This is gonna be overplayed on my iPod…

    Young the giant.

There has to be something good about living with three teenagers. Being introduced to some really cool music is one of them. (I’m being such a shit. my girls are great.)

And of course, Patrick Watson. The great escape. Man oh man.

Hope all of you are doing well.

GREAT song! But I just had to close the video down when he flashed his Pedo Mustache Smile

    2011/03/24 at 9:57 am

Yeah, that video is about as high-tech as Electric Avenue. Both look filmed in Grandma’s row house. Except Eddy Grant’s excuse went a little something like this: 1982! Still, this song, your song, IS beautiful.

Electric Avenue for those of you born after the Eisenhower administration:

Extremely timely since I’ve had “Sing your life” in my head all week.
    And, Jon?
You lucky SOB. DID you try to convert him?
Thanks Dooce. Without you I would be way less cool to my niece.
Have you heard Florence + the machine?
Oh crap. I just realized they’re from Twilight (which I did not see).
    I totally suck.
And double thanks on the way less cool to my niece part.

I don’t mind the music you post even if it is eighties-leaning, but I am looking forward to March being over so I don’t have to look at that masthead anymore!

Amazing! Also: since you like Robyn, you should check out this song she did for Royksopp. Here’s a video.

Heather B. Armstrong

Hi. I’m Heather B. Armstrong, and this used to be called mommy blogging. But then they started calling it Influencer Marketing: hashtag ad, hashtag sponsored, hashtag you know you want me to slap your product on my kid and exploit her for millions and millions of dollars. That’s how this shit works. Now? Well… sit back, buckle up, and enjoy the ride.
