Kennecott in the distance

Leta and I are headed to Santa Barbara to spend the weekend together, just the two of us, no unfair little sister tagging along. The last time I flew on a plane with her was in 2008 when we spent a week in Florida, so I’m really excited to witness her reaction to being that high in the air now that she’s five years older. I’m packing a few barf bags just in case.

I took this shot a few weeks ago on my way out to Ohio, and hopefully our flight today will exit the state in the same direction so that she can see Kennecott Copper Mine out in the distance. It’s the world’s largest excavation and open-pit copper mine, a giant gash along the Utah horizon. Look what we did to the earth, Leta! BEHOLD MANKIND.
