Not Maria's nursery

Last week we were finally able to put the final touches on the baby's nursery after what seemed like months of living with piles of crap up to our ears. Because before we could even address the nursery we had to tackle sixteen other projects first, and in the meantime everything we were collecting for the baby started to stack up in wobbly mountains throughout the living room. Every time we had company over I had to give a rambling explanation of why the path from the front door to the kitchen was booby-trapped, why there was a stack of burp cloths plopped on top of a wad of crib sheets teetering precariously on top of a bulk package of disposable breast pads. FOR MY CRACKED AND LEAKING NIPPLES. AREN'T YOU GLAD YOU CAME OVER TO MY HOUSE?

One of the biggest things to check off our list was new carpet in the basement, something we've been planning to do since we moved into the house. The previous owners had a cat who lived primarily in the basement, and since we never had the carpets professionally cleaned before moving in, Jon's allergies have made living his life nearly impossible. In fact, I may have brought up Jon's allergies to our marriage counselor more than once, and she may have told me that OH MY GOD SHUT UP isn't perhaps the most helpful reaction a wife can give to a husband who is complaining that his eyes have swollen shut.

So I took her advice, and the next time it happened I tossed a glass of water in his face and said SNAP OUT OF IT, FRANCIS. Much more instructive.

In the days leading up to the carpet installation I made a bet with Jon that it wouldn't take more than 15 minutes for him to declare that his allergies had been cured. He has a habit of doing this, stumbling over cures for various ailments and announcing, "I'm healed!" before he's even popped the pill or rubbed in the ointment. He will look at a bottle of vitamins and pronounce that he already feels better, and when I point out that I cannot take him seriously he will start listing off all the reviews he read about these vitamins, all the comparison shopping and painstaking research he did and A FIVE-STAR AMAZON RATING CANNOT BE WRONG, HEATHER.

And I am not even kidding, there wasn't more than five square feet of new carpet on the floor when Jon handed me a twenty dollar bill and said YOU WIN. This is just another example of how well we know each other, how deeply we accept and understand each other's various neuroses, and I'll just go ahead and admit that I have the better deal here because I am not married to someone who is Southern.

Once the carpet was in we were able to assemble all the other moving parts, starting with an antique brass bed that my mother found at a flea market well over ten years ago:

Why do we have a bed in the nursery? One, this room will serve double-duty as a guest room for the next year or so. And two, Armstrongs are not known for their peaceful sleeping habits. If this baby proves to be anything like Leta, Jon and I will most likely take turns with night duty in this room while the other one gets some sleep in our room. So let's just say that this bed will prove as vital as my Prozac to keeping the family intact.

Next we moved in the crib:

And then the dresser where all the baby clothes that Leta used to wear are now stored:

Jon schlepped down boxes and boxes of those clothes from the attic last weekend, and I spent three days washing and folding tiny onesies and nightgowns in between curling up in a ball and crying about how small Leta used to be. Where did that baby go? That irritable, chubby baby who screamed a lot every day with the screaming? I remember the moment she first discovered that she could fit both of her feet into her mouth, the delight on her face revealing that she had finally found a reason to go on living.

And then fast forward to last night as I'm giving her a bath and she goes, "These bubbles won't melt, right? Because only ice and chocolate melt. I love science!"

Just to preempt any questions in the comments, here is where I got everything:

All bedding is from Target.

Crib is the Oeuf Sparrow Crib in white.

Lamp is the Twine Floor Lamp from CB2.

Wallpaper is Daydream in yellow by Julia Rothman for Hygge & West.

Dresser is from a local place called Specialty Furniture.

Magnetic flower art on the wall is from Chiasso.

Handmade bunnies are from Loobylu.

Brilliant move, the bed in the nursery. I feel like you could open a betting pool, though, on how many nights it will take until everybody is in *that* bed instead of yours. When my second kid was a baby, that's what happened to us, so the only place I could get any sleep turned out to be the oldest kid's bed, after she'd left it for ours. Musical beds: the exhausted nursing mom's nightmare of befuddled sleep-seeking.

Heather, the room is beautiful and I love your new masthead. I really admire you for sharing part of your life with us, I love being a part of your community. Thank you!

I remember you mentioning once that when someone hates on you, you really consider it a reflection on them. Anybody who is cranky at you for spending a lot of money on stuff should be ashamed of themselves. Since they are able to afford a computer, Internet access and probably have a refrigerator full of food and clean water to drink, they have it better than many people in the world. We are all so wonderfully blessed. They should turn their critical remarks back on themselves and consider what is really important to them. To be happy with what they have, or make themselves feel better by harping on someone else. I am sorry that people here have chosen the latter.

To those who are complaining about Dooce's spending during a recession: Get over it, and please, do get a life...

Her spending isn't extravagant at all. That room is almost like the wedding adage of "something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue..." (I'm sure there's something blue in that room, right? 'Cuz I am colorblind--really, I am.)

If it bothers you she's spending money--which helps our economy--which also helps YOU, then find some other site to voice your lazy and jealous complaints.

I, for one, am happy that this little family works hard to provide for their children in a world where many adults do not.

180-My daughters bed was 1500 so suck it. Just because you can not or will not spend that much doesn't mean you need to say hateful things to those that can and do.

I love the flowers and was tempted to get them from Chiasso myself to go over my daughters crib but ended up getting magnetic butterflies in several different sizes instead. Now that I think about it, they would look awesome in my guest room.

I usually ask if my bf has taken anything for his sneezing, when he tells me no (he always tells me no) then I tell him to suck it up and go blow his nose. Glad to know I'm not the only mean one.

I'm a SAHM and have a blog myself and find other mom blogs to be helpful and they gives me a few minutes out of my otherwise hectic day to stop and spend a few adult minutes to myself. I say as one SAHM to another, talk about your cracked nipples all you want. I can relate and feel for you.

WOW. I have serious nursery jealousy. I never got to really "do" a nursery, and I'm just now trying to put some decorative touches on my 2 yr old son's room - things like animal curtains and a fun hippo rug (Ikea has been a life saver). But I always wished I could have the time and creative insight to do something like what you've done - it's A.W.E.S.O.M.E.!! It's almost too pretty to imagine flying poo and that yummy spit up smell crusting into the carpet ;) And the spare bed (ANYWHERE in the house) is so key! We wouldn't have survived our son's infant reflux without that extra bed!! I'm just so grateful we had room in our house for a 2nd bed!

But I gotta point out one thing that worries me - for the sake of the design elements more than the child herself - (and yes, I know, it won't be an issue for at least the first 6 months)....but I'm seeing crawling/cruising baby and tray table and standing lamp and crash boom bang there goes that pretty lamp and the nice vase of flowers on the table....just something to think about!

    Seriously Heather-
I'm broke, so you should buy lead-filled, cheap, plastic, made in China, crap for your child. How dare you support small business by spending your own money on the things YOU like and can afford.
SHEESH!!! People - Get over yourselves!!!! (every last one of those exclamation marks is warranted after the bathroom debacle and now this!)
I, for one, love to see that you DO mix it up by using products from Target and Ikea (and the FLEA MARKET!)that most people could realistically afford and then accent with some pricier, hand-made, unique pieces that make your designs stand out. Sometimes these pieces are things that a person might save up for and splurge on, or sometimes they are great inspirations (and challenges) for your reader to go out and find similar pieces that suit their own budget. It's not as though there is some requirement that the readers of your blog HAVE to go out and buy the same things as you (Or is there?!!? - Gasp!) In fact - I never even saw where you wrote that you were redecorating your home as a "how-to" manual for your readers...I just kinda assumed that you were redecorating your house for YOU and happened to post some pictures on YOUR blog...silly me! And if certain people take issue with you spending $600 on a crib they ought to see what some of the celebs in People mag are spending on rattles and prams and 11 foot tall moons for their nurserys! (I had a long wait at the Drs office recently!)
Do what you want - I'm a designer and I like the mixed matched tiles - I'd do it on purpose if I was redoing my bathroom - I also like the nursery and think that you have done a very nice job - am I going to copy every single thing you do and make over my next room just like yours? No - but I may take away some inspirations here and there...which (I suspect) may have been your original intentions when you began sharing your designs with your readers, no? Do me a favor though - next time you take the time to list what products you used and where you got them from, stick your thumbs in your ears with your palms out- wiggling fingers spread, stick out your tongue and go "Na-Na-Na-Na- Na-Na!" 'Cuz that's totally what you were thinking, right?

I love the nursery.... BUT... you know that all of the SIDS prevention information strongly encourages NOT using bumper pads and quilts in cribs. RIGHT? If you really want to have the bumper, wind in back and forth through the slats of the crib sides so that it is taunt and tuck the bottom edge below the mattress.

The nursery is just gorgeous. When you first posted pictures of the wallpaper, I thought it was nice but not spectacular. But now that it's in a room, it's amazing. And for those of us who have trouble with the basics of design, it's so great to see the way you've put things together! I'm one who doesn't "get" design well, so I probably would have picked a single color and figured that if everything in the room incorporated that color, I'd be set. But you have a whole variety of colors, and the birds aren't all from the same designer or exactly the same style--but they look beautiful together! I'm feeling a little braver now when it comes to my two boys' new room--I've been thinking sock monkeys!

I've been clicking around in a half-state here in my office and I'm like...irritated that your masthead is May still. So I go over to see if it's updated and BAM! nursery pictures too.

Remembering that you went down in a blaze of heedless internet glory, surely you can empathize with the utter glee this lends to the 9-5 girl.

    1) I love that you're putting so much deliberation into the nursery the second time around. Especially considering you could totally coast on it's-another-girl fumes.

    2) HOW ARE YOU GOING TO DUST THOSE MAGNETIC FLOWERS.

    3) The Internet never knew it was gonna create such a nutso thing as blog culture, wherein a lady can tell you to grow a spine and deal with snarky comments - cause you're asking for them lady!- and then wink at you on her way out. Is it wrong that I'm disappointed the haters aren't a little more neurotic this time around?

I am not pregnant, but my hubby and I are starting to talk about it, and I had a dream that I'd had a baby girl, and my husband named her Karina Katee Alison without my consent and I was livid. His mom was in on it and was whining that with three boys of her own, she didn't get to name a girl, so it was only fair that she got to name her. And that they thought by putting my name in there, it would all be ok. I spent the dream yelling "You don't get to name this child! She's my baby, her name's NOT Karina!" Which is a fine name, but I wasn't consulted. In the dream, I did get the nurse to use white out on the birth certificate.

I woke up really pissed at my husband. :)

#448, if you disagree with somebody else's style, that's fine. Just be nicer about it. Would you tell that to your best friend or sister? "Yeah sis, your style choice is f*ing ugly!" Probably not. I think that the anonymity of the internet is killing us slowly. At least, our sense of personal manners and ethics.

A very pretty room! Nicely done. We had a twin bed in our daughter's room when we moved her to her room and her crib at 6 months (she was in a bassinet in our room until then). Having the twin bed in her room was a lifesaver for those nights when she woke up all night long, and for times when she was sick, and we wanted to keep a closer eye on her.

i loved the oeuf cribs, but couldn't afford it. i got a $99 ikea crib instead, which has good lines and looks great! i think it's nice that you mix old and new, modern and vintage. totally the asthetic i'm going for as well. maybe ohdeedoh.com will feature your nursery!

First off, I love the title to this entry. LOL! =P Secondly, WOW that is the hippest baby room I've ever seen! You're great at decorating. All of the elements that you put together just makes it so unique and special (I love the two LobbyLu bunnies). No other household will have a baby room quite like yours. And SO SMART to have a bed in there, I never even thought about that. I know you, Jon and maybe even Leta will make a lot of use of it. That and "Not Maria" will sleep in it when she's older.

On another note: I’m loving your June 2009 header. It’s very cool. ;o)

Since your last newsletter posting to Leta and feeling how fast time flies...and now eager to 'meet' NotMaria...I've been going back and rereading all the sweet stories since that little frog came home....God, she was just the cutest little thing, wasn't she? So stubborn, so angry, so often LOL. Have to admit I sniffed more than once as I looked back. That little girl is just the best...quirky and imaginative and stubborn...I bet you'd be bored with a predictable middle of the road kind of kid. Where's the fun in that right?

What a pretty room! Good idea with the bed in the nursery. We put the baby's cradle and changing table in our master bedroom before our third baby was born and now with our fifth child being 3 months old, the cradle and changing table are still in our bedroom. It makes it convenient for changing one kid's diaper when another kid is napping. (Not that you will have that particular issue to work around.)

The swallows on the walls remind me of the swallows in the book ON THE DAY YOU WERE BORN. They are so lovely and tranquilizing that they might almost make you forget about the cracked nipples. Almost, but not quite. Actually the appropriate wallpaper to depict the feeling you get when first breastfeeding would be a leopard ripping apart its prey. But that might be traumatizing to the baby. But then so is mommy screaming, "DEAR GOD! HOW CAN SUCH TINY GUMS FEEL LIKE A VISE!" Good luck with the new baby. With a fun and funny mom like you, she's a lucky kid.

I'm sorry to write again, but I need to get this off my chest:

Oh, my God, the baby is gonna suffocate on the bumpers, and then the pictures are gonna fall and cut its little head off, and then there's gonna be a flood and you'll have to save the remains of the baby by throwing her through that tinny little window, and when you reach to the dresser (I don't know why you need to go to the dresser in this situation, but, hey, I'm just telling the story) and you break your leg because the bed was in the way, and now the birds are leaving their wall to come and feast off of your decaying corpse. And of course, Jon can't help because he's busy replacing the bathroom tiles, since the internet told him so, AND NOW WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE.

    *sigh*

THANK GOD the internet warned you about all that!

I feel better now, thank you.

To "bumper" or not to "bumper." We used the bumper as well as one of these http://www.swaddledesigns.com/
As an infant, the swaddling kept him cozy and he didn't move around much either while in it, helped him sleep through the night for sure, otherwise his little jarring limbs would wake him up.

I don't think anyone here talking about the bumpers has been hateful and I don't think they should be called a naysayer or a hater just because they've voiced genuine concern about them.

It doesn't mean they aren't giving Heather & Jon credit for being smart parents or caring parents (obviously they very much are smart & caring), it's just one of those situations where maybe people think "oh god, this is going to sound so arrogant of me & it's unsolicited, but SIDS research etc is enough to make me overstep the boundaries and say something in case they don't know about it". Yes, a lot of babies have bumpers and are just fine, but some aren't and those babies provide a heartbreaking statistic that is worth taking heed from.

It's not just about whether the baby can roll or freely move yet, it's thought to maybe be a SIDS risk as well & it's just not worth the chance. I'd say those who've voiced concern are thinking thoughts along the lines of "what if something bad happened and I hadn't said anything?" rather than hateful thoughts at all.

@523 - So the bedding is from Target. So what? How does that make the nursery an ad for Target? Unless my eyes deceive me, there's a list of 7 things and their sources in this post, and one of them is from Target.

You also seem to misunderstand how product placement works. If Target sends Heather a pile of baby things at their expense and asks her to write a post about them, that's product placement. If she buys something with her own money or receives it as a gift from a source unaffiliated with, in our example, Target (say, from a reader), and then writes about it...that's not product placement. The "placement" refers to the vendor having taken actions to effect the product's appearance in a given outlet. When a writer purchases something on her own and writes about it, the vendor has no control over the situation, and doesn't respond remunerate the writer. In fact, we generally call that "free advertising" and you're going to have a hard time making a case that Heather is "desperate" for giving something away for free.

Don't confuse ad space and paid product placement. They are two very different things. And have the stones to sign your name the next time you call someone a hypocrite.
